Overdue student loans are expensive

Interest on overdue payments will be charged on the whole student loan. It is important that you are aware of the consequences this will have for you. You will have to pay more interest if you do not pay what you owe. If you would like to learn more about interest on overdue payments, go to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund's website.

Please note that the interest rate can be changed twice a year (1 January and 1 July).

Has your student loan been temporarily or permanently transferred?

Temporarily transferred student loans – you are in default of instalments
If your loan has been temporarily transferred to us, it is in your best interest to have the student loan transferred back to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund as soon as possible. If you pay the amount you are in default plus the interest on the overdue loan, the loan will be transferred back to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund and you can repay the loan in accordance with the original payment plan without more interest on overdue payments – and keep your rights in the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. Contact us to know how much to pay to get the student loan back to the Norwegian State Loan Fund.

Permanently transferred student loans – you have been in default of your student loan for more than three years
If your student loan has been permanently transferred to us, it is no longer possible for you to have the loan transferred back to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund and you have lost the rights you had there. Interest on overdue payments will then be charged on the whole loan until it has been repaid in full.

Why is there interest on overdue payments ?

The Government has decided that all the three state banks, the Norwegian State Housing Bank, the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund, shall introduce a system of interest on overdue payments. The Norwegian State Housing Bank and the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund have already started to charge interest on overdue payments. The Ministry of Finance sets the rate of interest on overdue payments.
